2024 Paris Olympics

The 2024 Paris Olympics are ripe with firsts. The first floating Olympic cauldron. The first Opening Ceremony on a river. The first time American icon Snoop Dogg has blessed us with his exuberance and gusto for U.S. and international athletes across the board.

Perhaps the most important revelation this year is occurring not on the field of competition but rather the Olympic Village.

For the first time ever, the Olympic Village is home to a child care facility and nursery for parents participating in the Olympic Games.

The successful effort to implement the child care facility was led by seven-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix. Felix, a mother herself, partnered with Pampers to help provide wipes and nappies for mothers and fathers in the village.

This year, there are 16 mothers participating in the Olympics for Team USA. While it's unclear as to how many mothers in total are competing in the games as the International Olympic Committee does not publicly release such data, the games are expected to be the most gender-equal in history.

Previously, the most gender-equal games had been the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which came in at 48% female participation. Although organizers had hoped that this year's Olympics would finally hit the 50% mark, the number is expected to come in slightly under the halfway point.

A final tally will be released after the conclusion of the games based on number of actual participants.

Regardless of whether or not this year's game sees true gender equality, the 49% mark is a massive stride in the right direction bolstered by the much-needed addition of a child care facility.

Hopefully, the trend will continue on to all future games to ensure equal participation and accommodation of women and mothers.
